I am raising funds to assist with getting an Elder of the Wakapoa Village of the Lokono community in the Essequibo Region #2 Guyana, to get connected to the Internet so that we can document the Language.

The Lokono language is a critically endangered language. The Lokono, are the Indigenous community dispersed within 5 nations (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Venezuela, and Barbados). There are currently 2,000 (full) speakers of the language. There are a few dictionaries available but most are less than 1,000 words. We seek to create a very robust dictionary, and to create a website that will offer books in Lokono, recordings of native speakers of the Lokono Language, etc. We need to have open source children books translated into Lokono to make available to the schools in Wakapoa.We seek to spend the funds in the following manner: $2000 will be used to help connect an Elder of the Lokono community to the internet. This elder will help us with multiple language projects. It is a challenge to reach him now due to the poor connectivity of his phone. $1500 to develop a website that will be a platform to learn Lokono, and provide resources to the community such as Lesson Plans in Lokono for the classroom. This was the quote we received from 11:22 Creative Design (I have worked with them before, and this is offered at a steep discount from what they would normally charge).$500 to purchase equipment to facilitate the Lokono Elder in participating: computer, Monitor, Microphone, software. $500 to pay for the translations of multiple open source children's book into the Lokono language.
