About Me

Hello everyone!

My name is Terrance Powell and I am currently serving in the Peace Corps, Indonesia. I’m a volunteer English teacher in a village high school teaching grades 10 – 12. I live in the same village where I taught for the past 2 years and live with a local host family. There I have experienced the lifestyle and culture of the local people. It has been a rewarding experience to be integrated with a community completely different from mine back in the U.S.. I feel like a whole new perspective of life has opened up for me. Sadly, this upcoming May I’ll be finishing my service here, fulfilling a 2 year commitment. It has been a long, adventurous, and learning time here.

Since the start of high school, I’ve always been involved with volunteering. My high school had a club on campus, Key Club, where students volunteered around the community in various events. In college, I was a part of an organization, C.A.V.E., where I volunteered at a local elementary school to shadow a little buddy for a semester. There I’d help him with homework, help him focus during class, and play during recess. From an early age in high school had the privilege to volunteer in : Vietnam, for a 5 week program, Visions Vietnam, at a boarding school with special need students In college, I continued my passion for giving back in the Czech Republic, where I spoke at a local high school to help students there better their English.

Volunteering has been a big part of my life. A quote I’m sure everyone has heard before, “There’s always work to be done!” With that said, before heading back home to the U.S. I’d like to do just that which is build a home and fish ponds with Habitat for Humanity in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The project there is to build homes in a village and a fish pond as a revenue source for a local school. Southeast Asian weather only has two promises: heat and rain, it’s going to be enduring but as they say here, “tidak apa-apa” (no problem). I won’t be alone for the journey, I have very close friends who are like family to me, Paul, Jennifer, and Jack. Jennifer and Paul are a married couple and Paul was my high school counselor. They have been a huge part of my life, and their nephew Jack is a recent high school graduate. It’s always a special time with loved ones especially when volunteering for the good of others.

The journey starts on June 20. If you could please support or share this it would mean so much! Thank you for taking the time to read this.

More Info

Every three years we research and imagine where we can make a tangible impact into caring for our global family and this good earth. Chiang Mai, Thailand was chosen for these reasons:

The local community is responsive to Global Village teams that will allow our team of 18 to complete building a simple decent home along side our partner family within one week!

During the second week we are able to support a local school with the installation of fish ponds for their nutritional needs.

Third, Chiang Mai is a leader in humane care and support of orphaned, abused & aging elephants where our team can contribute to their care and health.

As part of Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village network, lives are being stabilized & transformed. A vision & strategy is being implemented globally to be have a significant impact on a housing crisis affecting over 20% of our global family.  And while we are currently working on building out Tiny House Villages here in the East Bay as part of the local solution its important to extend our care & concern to our broader global community.

We want you to be part of this out reach any way you can.  We seek your strong support and will create a communication network that brings you to the build, to the school & to the elephants as best we can. We will learn of personal stories and insights on how Rohingya rights can be protected.  Join us in transforming lives, being part of something remarkable because you want to change lives too!!

More about Thailand's housing crisis

Thailand’s National Housing Authority estimates nearly 8.2 million  live in substandard housing.

Poverty is widespread in the rural northeast, far north and far south of the country. Migration from rural areas has placed a strain upon the supply of affordable land. Migrants face high rent for small rooms and often live in overcrowded areas without proper sanitation. Squatter settlements are commonly seen along railway lines or near port and industrial areas. In addition to its traditional homebuilding model, Habitat Thailand uses a progressive building model in which homeowner partners construct a two-room core house with an open space, then add rooms and walls after three years or once a certain amount of the initial mortgage is repaid.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
